Smith, Florence Margaret (Stevie)

Smith, Florence Margaret (Stevie)
Born in Hull, she moved with her mother to Palmers Green, London, when she was three, and lived almost all her life there in the care of an aunt after her mother died and her father remarried. From the age of five, she spent three years in a sanatorium suffering from tuberculosis. For thirty years she worked for Newnes-Pearson, the magazine publishers. Her first, largely biographical, book, Novel on Yellow Paper (1936), was an immediate success. She wrote two more novels as well as short stories, literary reviews, and essays, but is remembered chiefly for her poetry, which she frequently illustrated with captivating line drawings. In 1966 she received the Cholmondeley award and in 1969 the Queen's gold medal for poetry. She died at Ashburton Cottage Hospital in Devon from a brain tumor. The stage play Stevie (1977) by Hugh Whitemore, starring Glenda Jackson, was later made into a successful film. Some of her poems: "Alfred the Great," "Analysand," "Bag-Snatching in Dublin," "Cat Asks Mouse Out," "Death in the Rose Garden," "Tender Only to One," "The Abominable Lake," "When the Sparrow Flies."
